The Scottish Highlands are awash with fabulous scenery and enough historical derring-do to fill a score of battlefields. It can be difficult to decide where to stay to make the most of this abundance - but a holiday cottage in Spean Bridge will tick all of the boxes.
Just 20 minutes north of Fort William, set off from your cosy Spean Bridge rental and make that your first stop. Beautiful Glen Nevis begins near the northern end of the town and extends south and east below the slopes of ‘The Ben’, Ben Nevis. Britain’s highest mountain at 1344m, Ben Nevis is a huge draw for hikers whilst movie buffs might be interested to learn that part of Oscar-winning ‘Braveheart’, starring Mel Gibson, was filmed here.
To a battle of different kind, Spean Bridge is best known for its military links during WWII. Thousands of Allied troops were based here, at Achnacarry Castle, to learn Commando Training in the surrounding mountains and lochs, a most challenging landscape. A Commando Memorial was erected in the village in the 1950s and visitors can learn about the story of the elite troops at the exhibition displayed at nearby Spean Bridge Hotel.
Back at your self-catering Spean Bridge cottage, having picked up some whiskey at the Ben Nevis distillery in Fort William, it’s time for a wee dram in front of a roaring fire. Slȧinte!
